Shadowboxing is not a warm-up.

Watch how most people shadowbox: two distracted minutes, arms loose, eyes on the clock, waiting for the "real" training to start. Then watch a fighter shadowbox: footwork sharp, imaginary opponent alive in front of them, every round with a theme. Same exercise. Completely different sport.

Shadow is where technique gets built

The bag gives feedback but it also hides flaws — you can lean on it, push punches, plant your feet. Shadow hides nothing. No balance means visible stumbling. No defence means your hands drop and there's no bag to blame.

Structure your rounds

  • Round 1 — footwork only. No punches. Move, pivot, cut angles.
  • Round 2 — jab and movement. The jab off the back foot, off the pivot, doubled up.
  • Round 3 — full combinations with defence. Every combo ends with a slip, roll, or step out.

Tape Notes — the short version

  • Three themed rounds beat ten aimless ones.
  • See an opponent. If you're punching air, you're just dancing.
  • End every combination with defence — habit is built here.

Shadow costs nothing, needs no gear, and fits in any room in your house. Zero excuses is the whole point.
