Buying your first pair of gloves comes down to three questions: how heavy, what they''re made of, and how to keep them alive. Here''s the short version of all three.
- Pick the ounce weight for what you''ll actually do. Bag work only? 12–14oz is fine for lighter, faster athletes. Sparring at all, even occasionally? Go 16oz — it's the standard at almost every gym in India because the padding protects your partner, not you. One pair for everything: 16oz.
- Check the material. Full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather breaks in instead of cracking, and holds up to repeated damp-dry cycles far better than a cheaper synthetic shell.
- Plan for monsoon care from day one. Out of the bag within an hour of training, air-dried (never heat-dried), and conditioned monthly in humid months. A full-grain pair treated right outlasts three cheap pairs treated carelessly.
- Check what happens if a seam goes. Hand-stitched seams from a small batch run should come with a real repair guarantee, not just a return window.
That's the whole decision. Everything else — colour, branding, lacing vs velcro — is preference, not protection.
