12oz vs 16oz: what your gloves say about your training.

The most common question in our DMs: "12 or 16?" The honest answer is that ounces measure padding, not hand size — and the padding exists to protect two different people depending on the day.

Bag work protects you

On the heavy bag, the padding is for your hands. 12oz is fine for lighter athletes and speed-focused sessions; most people are better served going heavier and letting their hands develop under proper protection.

Sparring protects your partner

In sparring, the padding is for the other person. This is why almost every gym in India — and every gym worth training at — mandates 16oz for sparring regardless of your weight. Showing up to spar in 12s tells the room you either don't know, or don't care. Neither is a good look.

Tape Notes — the short version

  • Bag work: 12–14oz if you're light and fast, 16oz for most people.
  • Sparring: 16oz. Not a preference — gym law.
  • Competition: whatever the ruleset says, usually 8–10oz.
  • If you can only buy one pair: buy 16oz. It does everything.

One pair budget? 16oz, full-grain leather, laced or a proper velcro strap. It's the pair that works everywhere.
